Hunters who are getting ready to go outdoors this fall should perform some extensive preparations far ahead of time. You never know what is going to transpire out in the wilderness. You might get stung by a bee, you could twist an ankle or you might even get lost. Let’s take a look the typical shopping list for a fall hunter.

Clothing

When you’re at the sporting goods store, be sure to purchase some high visibility clothing. This will ensure that you are clearly distinguished from other hunters, animals and anything else that moves. The last thing that you want is for your hunting partner to mistake your movement for that of a deer or other animal and shoot you. Pick out the brightest clothing you can find so that there is no questioning your identity...

Junior was born the son of Bocephus. He was destined for greatness. Having a renowned retriever for a father sets expectations high. Junior may have never won a world title, but he was a champion. The tears of two little girls prove it.

From the first time I read Where the Red Fern Grows over 20 years ago, I dreamt of owning a well-trained, highly-functional hunting dog. Time and attention kept that dream from becoming a reality for too long. Opportunity struck when I was presented the chance to buy Junior as a three-year-old field trial washout.

Dan’s first birds.

Recently, I read Leigh Newman’s essay What a Camping Trip Taught Me About My Marriage (and Myself) in Real Simple and it got me thinking about my own relationship to the outdoors and my husband Dan.

Like Leigh, I come from a family deeply rooted in the outdoors and the sportsman and woman community. So when I traded in my smaller hometown for the big city and stayed my family was a little in shock. And then when I fell in love with a city boy who loved to mountain bike they were welcoming but a little surprised. While Dan loved the outdoors and worked at outdoor camps he had never been hunting or exposed to the sportsman community. My brother joked that Dan had to “kill something” before becoming a part of our family...
