Megan Shuler is the latest inductee into the spring madness known as turkey hunting. On her first ever turkey hunt, she allowed her boyfriend to coax a longbeard into shotgun range, and the rest as they say is history. Amazingly, they went back to the woods the very next morning and she made it a two-fer on turkey harvests.

Shuler is a blonde-haired veteran of the beauty pageant system and was the 2012 Teen Miss South Carolina. Her philanthropic work during that year benefited the Palmetto Children’s Hospital, raising awareness for those in need of medial care. Today she is a student and a Teacher’s Assistant for Shotgun and Riflery at Clemson University and she shoots a Benelli 12-gauge shotgun.

The setting for her fateful first turkey h...

A Life Among the Silver Backed Males

I work in a pretty male-dominated field. I remember 20 years ago when I was interning for a wildlife conservation organization, my supervisor described our colleagues as “silver backed males,” a fairly apt description for the typically gray-haired men leading most of the conservation movement at the time. At the first conferences I attended, I was often struck by how skewed the gender demographics were in traditional wildlife management.

Shoot with the Girls

Tips-and-Tricks

Heather shooting an MR-15 at SEOPA.

For work, we attend conventions and some of them include days at the shooting range. I’ve been trap shooting and felt rushed, trying to fumble with a too-big-for-me gun while the experienced shooters wait for their turn. By far the best experience I’ve had is at SEOPA, where they hosted a women’s-only shoot for an hour or so before it was opened up to everyone.

Most of the women who attended this hour-long shoot didn’t have any experience with guns. Others were like me: like to go to the range but don’t very often. It was awesome to see the difference in atmosphere when it was just the ladies lined up...
