Given this is a blog devoted to sportswomen who hunt and fish, it’s time we talk camo… pink camo. The debate around pink camo is real.  I go back and forth about what pink camo really means to me and how it reflects on our community.  

Like many of you, I’m a girl who likes manis and pedis and even occasionally chooses to wear hot pink.  But in general, pink camo really turns me off.  Why?  To me pink camo says the industry doesn’t take women seriously who choose to get outdoors.  Pink camo is simply not practical.  The whole point of camo is to blend in so that you remain hidden from your target, right?!  How are you supposed to have a successful hunt when you’re alerting the pray wearing pink? 

On the flip side, pink camo is distinctly worn by girls and women so should we instead be wea...

Finding the right recipe may just inspire a new hunter or angler so it’s important to have great resources.  Here are a few cookbooks to consider (or if you’re like me add to your growing collection!)

Moving clockwise, I’ll start with What to Cook and How to Cook it by food writer and recipe editor Jane Hornby.  Although this cookbook is not about cooking wild game or fish, it’s the best book I’ve found for learning the basics – and let’s get real it’s all about the BASICS!  Hornby’s book is full of instructive photos from what it means to finely vs. roughly chop and the step-by-step set up for the book will arm you with the confidence.  

Okay, admittedly I haven’t even touched the next one – Open Range: Steaks, Chops and More from Big Sky Country by Jay Bentley – but everything is better...

For most outdoorsmen (and women!) there is no greater pleasure than passing on the love of the outdoors to children. However, hunting with kids can pose special problems and challenges. Kids are not apt to sit quietly in a stand for hours on end. 

Safe hunting rules need to be reinforced, possibly at every outing. Even if your children seem very interested in hunting and all that goes with it, remember to keep in mind that they are still children, and that they have different requirements than adult hunters.

Instead of sitting in a stand for hours at a time, try moving around. Sit in one place for an hour or two, and then walk to another area to sit for a while...
