Field Notes | Who needs more than S’mores?!

With camping season well underway, it’s time to talk about the important stuff – s’mores!

Last year, my husband and I debated about picking up s’more supplies before camping in Shenandoah and decided we could do without the sweet treats- wrong answer!! As the sun went down, we had a hankering and drove 45 minutes to find a small town where we could pick up supplies. In the end, the drive was totally worth it and now we know to never leave home without supplies for these gooey morsels.

Be warned! Never forget s’mores and enjoy this great guide from REI!

Raising outdoor kids

Jennifer and family

Growing up, we spent many weekends up at the lake or out in the woods. This was a focal part of my upbringing and made me who I am today. I’ve always loved being outside, whether I was sitting in a deer stand or casting a line from the boat. Now my husband and I have three children of our own and we’ve really started to focus on ways we can get them active in the outdoors at a young age so they can start to develop that love and appreciation for the outdoors as well. As an avid hunter, I’m eager to get them started early so when the time comes that they are of hunting age, my hope is that they will excited to get out in the woods. Here are 7 ways that we bring the outdoors into the lives of our young children:

1. Deer Season Prep! Fall is such a beautiful time to ...

Know what you eat

Nutritional-Infographic-1-1

Knowing where my food comes from is a big reason why I hunt and fish.  Call me a locavore if you must but there is something about the field to table experience.  And the calorie count speaks for itself – eating from the wild not only tastes good but is also nutritious and better for you.  Plus hunting and fishing contribute to an active lifestyle. With our nation fighting what seems to be an obesity epidemic, it’s time we become accountable for what we’re eating.  According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, over 35% of Americans over 20 are considered obese.  Keep it active, keep it wild and, remember, camo truly is the new black!

I’m currently a 27 year old female living in upstate New York. I’d like to once again declare that I live in upstate New York – the city is about 4 hours South of my area. I am surrounded by views of scenic mountains, rolling hills and colorful trees so picturesque that the sight would rob your lungs of air and heart of a beat. Too many people, including my younger self, believe New York to be swallowed by the city – not understanding the true beauty the state really has to offer. Now, if the politics were as pure, I’d certainly live in a paradise. But, it’s my home now, and you have to take the bad with the good.

Delaware is my first home, and also the “first state” (for those of you who thought you knew what Delaware was but wasn’t sure)...
