kateRecently we returned from an epic trip down to Louisiana where we absolutely crushed big Redfish on the fly. Frigate Travel took a group of guests and we fished with Capt.Greg Dini and his crew at Flywater Expeditions. Many fish over twenty pounds, some over thirty, and a couple pushing forty. All sight fishing and some popper fishing as well.

It was a grand time to include amazing food in the Big Easy. As the photo above showed, the girls boat (k8 and Remi) kicked some butt one day and landed this fish among many many others. Thanks to all the guides for their patience, great attitudes, and winning personalities. We will be back!

How to row a boat like a pro

Guest Post

By Mia Sheppard

Kids are like running, babbling brooks that never stop moving, the continual trickle of curiosity, flows.

From crawling to walking, to listening to her pronounce her first word, “mama” to completing a full sentence a couple years later,  “why can’t a fish breath out of water?” Reminds me of my own curiosity as a child.

Tegan learns to row.

Tegan learns to row.

My mom was single most of my childhood, she worked hard to give us those simple pleasures such as a piece of candy or a new pair of shoes or playing hop scotch with us after work.  She also made sure weekends where dedicated to spending time outdoors, forgetting about the dishes that needed to be done or the bills that needed paid.

At that time, youth and ignorance was bliss...

You might say my story is an unlikely one.

I grew up in suburban Connecticut, where many of my peers’ interests centered around video games or the mall.  Yet I was always happiest exploring the neighborhood woodlot
and nearby marshes.  In college I studied biology at a liberal arts school in Massachusetts that specialized in producing future physicians.  Instead, I chose a career in wildlife conservation.  I took up hunting about six years ago, but going by demographics alone (as a young, suburban, college-educated woman from the northeast) – it’s reasonable to predict that I might have instead held some anti-hunting views.

I confess I laughed out loud at part of Jodi Stemler’s rec...

Panoramic Living

Next week I graduate from the University of Idaho. It makes me laugh to imagine opening up the mail after they send out my diploma this summer, how small it’s going to seem compared to what I actually learned during my years at school. It also makes me laugh because I’m job hunting and have no idea where the envelope holding my diploma should be addressed.

Oh, well. Idaho requires an appreciation for the unexpected from its residents. We expect the weather to surprise us as often as the pot holes in the roads do, and with cardigans and four-wheel drive we try to handle it gracefully. It’s only natural in a state famous for ski hills, sand dunes, whitewater and big open spaces; the northern and southern halves connected only by a two-lane scenic highway...

In the news: Backcountry Hunters & Anglers Inaugural Women and Hunting Panel

IN-THE-NEWS

Just a few weeks ago, Backcountry Hunters & Anglers hosted their annual Rendezvous in Denver, Colorado.  Unlike other years, BHA included a women and hunting panel.  The panel was a big success with good attendance featuring Prois Hunting marketing rep Paige Hill Murphy, Extreme Huntress Amanda Lowrey, Seek Outside owner and founder Angie Timm and Camo is The New Black co-founder Whitney.  Check out this video featuring the panel:

We were proud to be a part of a panel of such high caliber women and encouraged to have a hunting and fishing organization feature women so prominently.  This is only the beginning…
