Raising outdoor kids

Guest Post

Jennifer and family
BY JENNIFER CONE

Growing up, we spent many weekends up at the lake or out in the woods. This was a focal part of my upbringing and made me who I am today. I’ve always loved being outside, whether I was sitting in a deer stand or casting a line from the boat. Now my husband and I have three children of our own and we’ve really started to focus on ways we can get them active in the outdoors at a young age so they can start to develop that love and appreciation for the outdoors as well. As an avid hunter, I’m eager to get them started early so when the time comes that they are of hunting age, my hope is that they will excited to get out in the woods. Here are 7 ways that we bring the outdoors into the lives of our young children:

We’re also pretty inseparable – living together off and on for over 10 years –or at least we were until Christie, the older/wiser one, decided to up...

Refreshing Western Air

heather-hiking

Heather and her best friend, Stephanie, hiking in Boise.

It’s always incredibly refreshing to get out of Washington, D.C., and go back West. Rather than my usual Christmas trip, I was able to visit Idaho in August to see family and friends.

This was a shorter trip, so I wasn’t able to get off the grid like I usually hope to (the idea of being out of cell range seems to terrify most DCers but I crave it!) – though I was able to go on a short hike with my best friend. We didn’t leave the city limits and were able to go on a real hike, people. I can’t tell you how invigorating that is.

So as we finish out this day and dive in to the long Labor Day weekend, Whitney and I hope you’re able to enjoy some time outdoors. Go shooting, take your reel out or set off for a hike!
