Every year I inch closer to having my life back.  It is a terribly selfish thing for a mother to say.  But I say it out loud, along with a myriad of other not-so-perfect thoughts on the realities of being a mother.  The life I long to have back is my pre-child hunting life.  The days of endless miles of hiking, spontaneously exploring the millions of acres of National Forest that rest at my fingertips, happily enduring all inclement weather thrown in my path, throwing a few granola bars in my pack as ample sustenance for whatever lies ahead; all the things I took for granted as a hunter in the western United States before having kids.

Post children, my hunting life with kids- when it exists- has become bribing the kids with chocolate to walk just a few more yards, m...

A social scientist, a fly fisherwoman, an archery huntress, and a hook and bullet daughter held court on an all-women panel at this year’s Rendezvous. Last year was the inaugural women in hunting and fishing panel at the yearly gathering of Backcountry Hunters and Anglers. This year I was honored with an invitation to sit on the panel.

Stacy Keogh, a sociology professor at Whitworth University, kicked things off by presenting her findings about the motivations of women hunters. She interviewed 39 hunting women of various ages across 11 states and she shared a few of their responses as well as distinct themes in their responses. Many respondents said they recognize they are challenging gender norms by hunting, some mentioned how they enjoy challenging this norm...

STINKY DITCH WEED? Why Not?

It’s a bird, it’s a plane….NOPE it’s a Prois Girl killin’ time until spring turkey and the mighty mushroom season!!! Most of us in the outdoors look forward to the months of May and June not just for spring turkey, but for Morel mushroom season.

I’m like a goofy kid on Christmas morning!! It helps pass time until shrooms and gobblers, and it’s pretty fun! I’d like to say I am just so dang smart that I knew our orchard not only fulfilled our bellies with apples, cherries, peaches AND wild asparagus….but not so much!!

Taking my dogs for their daily run one spring day la...
