Women often cite spending quality time with friends and family as the number one reason they get outdoors. Mother’s Day is coming up (Sunday, May 11 for those of you who need a little reminder) so this is a great opportunity to ditch the flowers and get mom something that will build memories. Here are some ideas for you:

Whether you call them rockfish or striped bass, this time of year on the Chesapeake Bay is when to get your trophies.  These fish are BIG – averaging from 20 to 40 pounds! And it’s only an hour drive for city dwellers of D.C. 

Rockfish trophy season runs from April 19 to May 15th for 2014.  Fish must be above 28 inches to keep and only one fish is per fisher – so good luck!  After May 16th, the rockfish size and limit changes to 18 inches or above and each fisher is able to keep two fish.

In the late 1970s, two Wisconsin professors conducted a series of surveys from more than 1,000 hunters. The results showed that there are five stages of hunter behavior and development. HuntingBoots.com visualized these stages and wants to know—do they ring true for the hunters you know?

Just a few weeks ago, Backcountry Hunters & Anglers hosted their annual Rendezvous in Denver, Colorado.  Unlike other years, BHA included a women and hunting panel.  The panel was a big success with good attendance featuring Prois Hunting marketing rep Paige Hill Murphy, Extreme Huntress Amanda Lowrey, Seek Outside owner and founder Angie Timm and Camo is The New Black co-founder Whitney.  Check out this video featuring the panel:

Shooting can be really fun. It can also be really intimidating, especially when surrounded by a bunch of men who seem to know what they’re doing.

For work, we attend conventions and some of them include days at the shooting range. I’ve been trap shooting and felt rushed, trying to fumble with a too-big-for-me gun while the experienced shooters wait for their turn. By far the best experience I’ve had is at SEOPA, where they hosted a women’s-only shoot for an hour or so before it was opened up to everyone.

Most of the women who attended this hour-long shoot didn’t have any experience with guns. Others were like me: like to go to the range but don’t very often. It was awesome to see the difference in atmosphere when it was just the ladies lined up...
