Field Notes | Blaze Pink

blazepink

With a decreasing percentage of hunters and anglers in America, the sportsmen community is worried about recruitment and retention – could the availability of blaze pink be the silver bullet?

In an attempt to attract more women to hunting, several states across the country (including Louisiana, Minnesota, Wisconsin….) are introducing legislation to legalize fluorescent pink for deer season as a substitute to blaze orange.  In reaction, many women are throwing up their arms and calling the blaze pink movement sexist.

Although I’m unlikely to ever don blaze pink myself, I find myself pondering an array of questions. Why not support pink? Maybe the pink should be a badge of honor rather than a stigma? What kind of hunter does legalized blaze pink attract?

But despite these questions, I alwa...

Gun Utopia?

IN-THE-NEWS

Recently in my home state of Montana, there were two murders by guns in a mid-sized town in the span of a week.  One incident involved a mother suffering from postpartum depression and the second involved a scorned lover with mental health issues. Murder is not something Montana faces very often. These incidents have me very troubled, especially as my husband and I talk about growing our family and our desire to move back west to raise our hypothetical children. We want our children to be able to bike to a friend’s house without worry and we want our children to explore the world in freedom and safety. But these two gun related incidents weigh heavy on my mind and heart.

I’m a sportswoman and love to hunt. I respect individual freedoms, the right to bear arms and gun owner rights...

Field Notes | Fishing in the fall

Infographic

The Hubs and I are headed out to Shenandoah this weekend to camp and *cross your fingers* dapple in a little fly fishing.  We’ve had heavy rains the past few weeks in and around DC, which has spoiled plans to get out several weekends.  With heavy rain, the water gets too high and muddy to fish but we’re hoping with this dry week that the fishing has been improved and we’ll finally get our feet in some cool water. It’s been too long since our Montana trip and I’m itching to land a fish!  Practice makes perfect right?! And if anything is right, it’s that we need more practice. Here’s a guide to North America’s fish to prepare us for what we *will* be pulling out of the water…

Know what you eat

Nutritional-Infographic-1-1

Knowing where my food comes from is a big reason why I hunt and fish.  Call me a locavore if you must but there is something about the field to table experience.  And the calorie count speaks for itself – eating from the wild not only tastes good but is also nutritious and better for you.  Plus hunting and fishing contribute to an active lifestyle. With our nation fighting what seems to be an obesity epidemic, it’s time we become accountable for what we’re eating.  According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, over 35% of Americans over 20 are considered obese.  Keep it active, keep it wild and, remember, camo truly is the new black!
