I consider myself a pretty hard core hunter.  If you look inside one of my three freezers, as well as the freezer in my office, they are overwhelmingly full of things I’ve harvested.  Ground venison outweighs ground beef, and ducks and geese outnumber chicken nuggets by at least ten times.  As far as fish, well, I can’t really remember the last time I actually went to a store and bought fish.  I can honestly say that me and my wife and two kids eat more wild game than store bought food.  No doubt.

And now that my kids are getting older, I’ve started thinking about what I hope will be a long, personal relationship with their natural world that they will develop with the mentoring of me, my wife and my inner circle of hunting and fishing buddies...

Goose Fajitas

Recipe

Goose Fajita Assembled

In part, like Peggy,  I’m in it for the food when it comes to hunting. I absolutely love to cook and I love filling the freezer.  There is something about creating a meal from a hunt or fishing trip that makes the food taste even  more delicious.  So today I’m sharing a tried and true recipe for goose fajitas, take it as a last minute idea for Valentine’s Day – Whitney

Marinate, place the sliced goose in a large Ziplock and pour the two packets of seasoning in with the goose. Mix thoroughly and set aside for at least 5 hours. I set it in the refrigerator for 24 hours, which helps tenderize the meat.

With the locavore movement inspiring new hunters and anglers, camo suddenly becoming fashionable and increased visibility of the sportsmen community through shows like Duck Dynasty, you’d think the sportsmen community was multiplying at a rapid rate.  Unfortunately, that’s not the whole truth.  According to a 2012 report from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the number of hunters and anglers increased for the first time since 2006 (9 and 11 percent respectively). And some of this increase is due to the small uptick of female hunters and anglers according to a July Responsive Management survey.

As women who hunt and fish, we are the silver-lining; we’re key to keeping our nation’s hunting and fishing heritage alive – Camo truly is the New Black...
