Field Notes | Let’s grow old together (in waders!)

Last month, Dan and I headed out to Colorado to fly fish and toted the SHE Outdoor Waterfowl Waders across the country to finally do the field test.   

We rented a car in Denver and drove six hours to Durango (yes, we took the long way!), stopping only for a beer in Ouray.  Although charmed by the Alps like town, we couldn’t wait to get over the mountain because we were fly fishing in the morning!

Every year I inch closer to having my life back.  It is a terribly selfish thing for a mother to say.  But I say it out loud, along with a myriad of other not-so-perfect thoughts on the realities of being a mother.  The life I long to have back is my pre-child hunting life.  The days of endless miles of hiking, spontaneously exploring the millions of acres of National Forest that rest at my fingertips, happily enduring all inclement weather thrown in my path, throwing a few granola bars in my pack as ample sustenance for whatever lies ahead; all the things I took for granted as a hunter in the western United States before having kids.

Nationwide celebration of female outdoor enthusiasts to take place Saturday, April 18

SIDNEY, Neb. — Cabela’s announced today plans to celebrate the company’s biannual Ladies’ Day Out event, Saturday, April 18, at stores nationwide with guest appearances, sales, seminars, workshops and more.

According to the Outdoor Foundation’s 2014 Outdoor Participation Report, of the 142.6 million U.S. participants in outdoor activities, 46 percent – approximately 65.6 million – are female. Cabela’s Ladies’ Day Out event offers educational workshops and insight on outdoor products and activities and encourages women and families to embrace and enhance their passion for the outdoors.

A Woman’s View: We Aren’t Just Gatherers

A social scientist, a fly fisherwoman, an archery huntress, and a hook and bullet daughter held court on an all-women panel at this year’s Rendezvous. Last year was the inaugural women in hunting and fishing panel at the yearly gathering of Backcountry Hunters and Anglers. This year I was honored with an invitation to sit on the panel.

 Stacy Keogh, a sociology professor at Whitworth University, kicked things off by presenting her findings about the motivations of women hunters. She interviewed 39 hunting women of various ages across 11 states and she shared a few of their responses as well as distinct themes in their responses. Many respondents said they recognize they are challenging gender norms by hunting, some mentioned how they enjoy challenging this norm...
